Pokémon Types: Dragon
Regarded as the most powerful type in the game, Dragons are some of the rarest and most powerful in the game. They have well rounded stats and are hard to counter. Depending on their types, Dragons can have few or several weaknesses. A pure Dragon only had two weaknesses. Ice and Dragon.
In the first Generation, only three Dragons were known. Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite. They were mystical and only Lance had Dragon Types unless you yourself used them. Dratini and Dragonair were weak to Ice and Dragon type attacks, but the Dragonite, its final form, gained a weakness and an immunity. It was now weak against Rock type moves, but immune to Ground Types.
That changed however as we entered the second Generation. A new Dragon was introduced in the form of Kingdra, a Water/Dragon Type that evolved from Horsea and Seadra. With its unique typing, its only weakness was other Dragons. Also, the only Gym that used Dragons was introduced as Clair used Dragons in Blackthorn City.
As the third Generation was released, more Dragons were introduced. The most well known are Bagon, Shelgon, and Salamence. This Dragon evolution stage proved to be more popular than Dragonite when compaired and used in competitive battling. Alteria is another Dragon Type, evolving from Swablu. Vibrava and Flygon is the other pair, which evolved from the pure Ground Type Trapinch. Also, the first Legendary Dragon Pokémon made its debut; Rayquaza. Also, the pair Latios and Latias are Dragon/Psychic
When the fourth Generation came around, more Dragons were introduced. Gible, Gabite, and Garchomp were this Generation's pseudo non-legendary pair. This time, they were Dragon/Ground types. Gaining an Electric immunity, they also gained a 4x Ice Weakness. Also, more legendaries were introduced. Palkia, a Dragon/Water Type. Dialga, a Dragon/Steel Type, and Giratina, a Dragon/Ghost Type.
In Generation five, the only two known Dragon Types are Reshiram and Zekrom, which are Dragon/Fire and Dragon/Electric. Nothing else is known about them.

There are other Pokémon that are considered Dragon Types or Dragon Worthy. Charizard is the preferred starter for Dragon Tamers. Gyarados and Aerodactyl are other commonly used Pokémon for Dragon Teams.
Countering Dragon Types
Dragon Tamers are hard to battle against. To counter Dragons, you must used the elements against them. Ice is the main foe against Dragons. Bulky Water and Ice Types can stand against them long enough.
As most Dragons are part Flying, that weakness is doubled yet again. So you are looking at x4 the original damage, very useful to know. Same goes for Garchomp. Another way to counter Dragons is to use Dragons against them. Dragon is one of two types that hurt itself.
Using Dragon Types
To use Dragon Types correctly, you must vary your Pokémon. A Dragon Tamer doesn't have to use pure Dragons to be considered a Dragon Tamer. Gyarados and Charizard are great choices for putting on a Dragon Team. Gyarados has high attack and learns Ice Fang, a good move for it to learn. However, it has x4 weakness to Electric Types. Charizard too can help neutralize any Ice Types by using Rock Slide or Flamethrower. However, it has x4 weakness to rock.
Aerodactyl is the third choice for a well balanced Dragon Team. Very fast, it can outrun most Pokémon and do a lot of damage. However, it also has a weakness to Ice due to its Flying type. It's Rock Type and with a good Rock move can cripple most Ice Types.
Now, for the actual Dragon Types. Salamence, Dragonite, and Garchomp are all Dragon Tamer worthy and have a good spot on the team. However, all three of them have a x4 weakness to Ice. Another good pick is Kingdra, who does not have a weakness to Ice. Flygon and Alteria are also good for a spot on a Dragon Tamer Team.
Final note: You must never underestimate a Dragon Tamer. They will hit you hard, and will hit you fast. If you don't take them seriously, they will beat you. You have to take advantage of their weaknesses before they reveal your own and strike you down before you don't know what happened. Dragon Tamers are some of the strongest trainers around. Be wary of them.

Re: Pokémon Types: Dragon
I think Dragon types are pretty good Pokemon. I still think some non dragon types should be dragon.

"Salamence, Dragonite, and Garchomp are all Dragon Tamer worthy and have a good spot on the team. However, all four of them have a x4 weakness to Ice." - shouldn't it be "all three of them"
